Google has announced that it is to end support for its cross-platform communication tool Wave, BBC News has reported.Wave, a real time collaboration and communication tool launched only last year, has been axed due to a lack of user take-up. It was developed by brothers Jens and Lars Rasmussen, the developers behinds Google’s popular maps feature.“Wave has not seen the adoption we would have liked.

We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects,” stated Urs Holzle, a representative of Google in the company blog.

While addressing a tech conference in Lake Tahoe, California, Google CEO Eric Schmidt acknowledged that Wave was a failure, but stated that Google is always ready to innovate and experiment without fear of failure. He said that the company believes in celebrating its successes as well as its failures.

The Guardian has revealed that software giant Microsoft will shortly commence a multi-million pound advertisement campaign in the UK, in an attempt to challenge the extensive dominance of Google in the UK search engine market.

According to an article on the news site, the software giant has come with a three-month long advertisement campaign with the help of the world-renowned advertisement company JWT, which will include three TV advertisements that will revolve around the punchline, ‘Bing and decide’.

Commenting on the upcoming advertisement campaign, the managing director and vice-president of consumer and online at Microsoft UK, Ashley Highfield, said in a statement that “People feel overawed by the internet and what they turn up when they are searching.
Search engine giant Google is all set to roll-out its Google Wave collaboration tool to businesses via its Google Apps web service along with its popular VoIP software Google Voice. The company also has plans to dish out 200 new improvements and updates for its office productivity tools.

Talking to eWeek, Google enterprise President, Dave Girouard, said in a statement that the company will be releasing Google Wave and Google Voice to businesses sometime soon in 2010.

According to Mr. Girouard, Google plans to bundle the two software services with Google Apps software suit for businesses in an attempt to offer more functionality and better inter-organisation communication to its customers and looks to take on software behemoths Microsoft and IBM, which offer their own range of office collaboration tools based on cloud computing technology.

Commenting on the possibilities that will emerge from the integration of Google Wave and Google Voice with Google Apps, Girouard told eWeek that “We are really focusing on the capability to deliver a better and better experience to end users across all applications on mobile devices and also through our Chrome browser and eventually Chrome OS.”

Google, the California based search engine giant, is currently in middle of talks with Yelp, the highly popular local review and search engine, to acquire the website, which reportedly gets more than 25 million unique visitors every month.

TechCrunch has reported that Google is in an advanced stage of negotiations to acquire Yelp for at least $500 million in an attempt to become a major force in the local search marketplace.

The search giant has taken into account the fact that Yelp has a dedicated user base across metropolitan locations in USA and a huge database of reviews on local businesses.

Yelp, which was founded in 2004 by Jeremy Stoppelman and Russel Simmons, allows its users to post reviews of businesses in and around their local area, something that Google has been actively trying to replicate on a global scale with its own Google Maps and Places.

The company had announced earlier that its revenue for 2009 will be around $30 million and it had also predicted $50 million revenue for 2010.

It appears that Google is acquiring companies that will ensure its smooth entry in the local market place segment as the company has recently taken over AdMob, a local advertising platform for iPhones for $750 million.

In a move that could comprehend the practical usability of Google’s new Wave, Novell has announced the first real-time communication collaboration tool for enterprises.

Dubbed as “Novell Pulse”, the new tool is embedded in Google’s Wave collaboration suite and enables colleagues to effectively collaborate on a range of documents.

The tool also enables employees to create their own profiles to publish details about their sphere of expertise, and share updates and status, along with several other notifications of their recent actions with co-workers.

“With Novell Pulse, people continents apart can work together in real-time, sharing and co-browsing information or creating or editing a document”, Novell cited on its website.

The tool was demoed on Wednesday 4th November at the Enterprise 2.0 symposium in San Francisco, and the tool is expected to launch in beta phase in as early as the first half of next year.

The tool would initially be available in an internet-hosted Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model in the first half of 2010, and would later be launched as on-premise software.

Pulse is joining the league of some of the established enterprise collaboration suites, including IBM Lotus, Jive Software, NewsGator, and Socialtext.

The newly demoed tool aims to tether in various features from popular social networking platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, to workplaces, with enhanced security and IT management capabilities that modern organisations need the most.

Search engine giant Google is all set to open up its Google Wave platform for federation today which will pave the way for users to connect their own Wave servers with the Google infrastructure, according to a report carried out by TheNextWeb.

A striking fact about the much vaunted Google Wave platform is its federated design which essentially offers users to share their Wave servers with other servers running on Google Wave platform and it opens up interesting possibilities in real time collaborative computing and information sharing.

It is important to note that Google currently offers the Google Wave platform through two distinct infrastructures with one dedicated to the developer preview sandbox while the other is for consumer preview which currently is limited to a hundred thousand users only.

Now Google plans to throw open the sandbox infrastructure sometime today and thereby letting users with their own Wave servers to connect seamlessly with the Google infrastructure.

Since its launch, Google Wave has been drawing accolades for the sheer flexibility and extensive set of gadgets it provides and its new move is surely going to add to its stellar repute.
