• Yahoo, Google, IBM Set To Benefit From US Stimulus Money

    Yahoo Inc, Hewlett-Packard, Alcatel Lucent and International Business Machines are among the 14 companies that will have a share in the $20 million grant awarded by the United States Department of Energy for developing technologies to enhance energy efficiency in US IT and telecommunications companies.

    Steven Chu, the US Energy Secretary, said in a statement that “Information-technology and telecommunications facilities account for approximately 120 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually–or 3% of all U.S. electricity use.

    The energy-efficiency projects announced today will reduce energy use, while helping to develop a strong, competitive domestic industry.”

    According to DOE, Yahoo Inc will receive a $9.9 million grant for designing a data center that will use ambient air for cooling purposes and will have a repeatable design. HP has received $7.4 million to test a new data center that uses alternating current and water cooling components.

    Alcatel Lucent will be getting a $1.8 million grant to develop technologies that use heat-sink structures and device-level liquid cooling in order to reduce server heat.

    IBM’s T. J. Watson Research Center received two separate grants totaling to $4 million for developing software-based cooling tools and liquid metal thermal interfaces.
